MotoConcepts Racing: ANAHEIM 1 SX Report

SPOKANE, WA (January 4, 2014) – The first round of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross in Anaheim, CA always seizes to excite the 60,000 attending fans and race teams, anxiously awaiting some Supercross madness. Team MotoConcepts by Smartop riders Mike Alessi (#800/450) and Kyle Cunningham (#30/250E) say they feel confident and excited about the upcoming supercross season. After working with Michael Byrne over in Florida, Alessi feels even more comfortable taking on the 2014 450SX Class.

The night started off with a bang as Alessi grabbed an outstanding, signature holeshot in the 450SX Heat 1. The nineteen other riders charged to the first corner as Alessi made his way into the rhythm section ahead of the pack. He held onto his lead throughout the entire race, keeping in mind everything he had learned and worked on during the off season. In the last lap of the race, Ryan Villopoto was approaching the #800 bike but Alessi wasn’t about to give up this potential win easily. In the final two corners of the race, Alessi chose a smart inside line, cutting Villopoto off from the steal and taking home his first Heat race win of his career

Confidence and motivation overwhelmed Alessi as he lined up for his first 450SX Main Event of the year. Unfortunately, Alessi’s front wheel got caught in the gate as he took off just a second too soon. The mishap positioned him into last place, but only for a short while. After five laps, Alessi made his way past three other riders, and then another two in the following lap. Alessi pushed through the pack and made it up to 12th place by the end of lap ten. He held onto this position until he crossed the finish line for the first time in 2014. With his first Heat race win and ability to move up from last to 12th, Alessi has high hopes for the upcoming supercross season.
